I took a break from painting today to work on some jewellery orders. Here are a couple of fun little paintings I finished yesterday for the upcoming Euphoria show:
This one is inspired by a favourite childhood poem, written by Gelett Burgess in 1895:
“I never saw a purple cow,
I never hope to see one,
But I can tell you anyhow,
I’d rather see than be one!”
I can see a series of “Horses of a different colour” coming into being. Just silly little paintings for horse-crazy kids!
These are just quick little paintings, something that may appeal to the younger (or young at heart) crowd, and because I don’t have a lot of time invested in them, I can offer them at a lower price.
And to finish off, a work-in-progress, again for the Euphoria exhibit.
This is a new direction for me, a more contemporary, less realistic style of portrait. It is a style I’ve been wanting to explore for quite some time, so I thought I would use the Euphoria exhibit to play with it a little. Heart is my dog, a sweet and happy border collie. This is the first time I’ve painted her portrait, if you can believe that!
It is fun to be painting a portrait with only myself to please, and in a style to which I find myself being drawn to work. It suits my intuitive way of working better than the more realistic style I have been working in. Still a bit of tweaking left to do, I somehow got the values in her mouth wrong, so that her tongue is darker than the inside of the mouth.
I have some purple Blue Herons which I will post next!
